What is a Giclée print ?
Pronounced “zhee-clay. The word giclée is derived from the French verb gicler, “to spray,” in reference to the type of printer used.
Giclée prints are made with extremely high-quality, large-format inkjet printers. You may have an inkjet printer at home; however, that printer is not capable of creating giclée prints. These printers are different in several significant ways. A typical inkjet printer uses a 4-color process - cyan, magenta, yellow and black dyed inks - to create an image. For a print to be considered giclée, it must be made with a printer that uses at least an 8-color process and must use pigmented inks that are far more permanent and vibrant than dyed inks. My prints are made with a 10-color process. This means instead of 4 ink colors, CMYK, the printer has cyan, light cyan, magenta, light magenta, yellow, light yellow, black, grey, green and violet. This is very important, as it allows for a far wider color gamut, in other words it allows a much greater range of colors to be printed accurately. This difference is most visible with bright, vibrant colors, as standard inkjet printers do not have the light versions of inks and thus have to dim bright colors.

Varnished Giclée Prints On Cradled Birch Panels.

I use a hand plane to flatten the sides and bottom of these panels so that they are stable standing on their own in addition to being ready to hang. |
to make these I first I take a canvas or etching rag Giclée print and apply an acrylic varnish that brings out greater saturation and contrast. Than I Stain the edges of a cradled solid birch panel and if needed use a hand plane to flatten the sides so its stable standing on its own and add a wire for hanging. After that I and finish it with spar varnish to bring out the iridescence of the wood. Once that has dried I attach the print using a ph neutral bookbinding glue that both firmly attaches the print and creates a barrier between it and the wood.
