I have been playing piano for 18 years and studied Jazz Piano Performance at Cornish College of the arts. Although I specialize in jazz, I have experience performing a wide range of different genres. I believe that everyone is capable of learning how to play the piano given the right direction and encouragement. What I offer my students is a highly personalized learning experience geared towards each students unique interests.
To me learning how to play piano is not about winning competitions, its about having fun, and learning a skill that you will be able to enjoy for the rest of your life. That is why instead of having each of my students go through the same books and learn the same songs I make sure that each is learning music they truly enjoy playing. For example, for my beginning students I often compose pieces for them to play in addition to pieces from the book they are working through. This allows me to ensure that the material is both interesting and that it is at the appropriate level.
In addition to teaching the expected fundamentals I offer my students a deeper understanding of music by teaching modern music theory. This includes understanding chord symbols, being able to analyze chord progressions, and understanding the relationship between chords and scales and how these components are used in improvisation and composing. I have experience teaching students of all ages, and skill levels.
